Jennifer Shahade

Jennifer Shahade (USA, b. 1980) won the American ladies’ chess championship twice. Currently she concentrates on poker and chess commentary. Shahade has created video art with Daniel Meirom, including pieces with chess themes like Hulachess and Naked chess. Both videos are based on the ideas of Marcel Duchamp. Shahade provided the game analysis in the recently published Marcel Duchamp. The Art of Chess (by Francis Naumann and Bradley Bailey). Shahade also wrote two chess books. Play like a girl is a chess puzzle book written for girls, with potted biographies of well-known female chess players and chess puzzles based on games. In Chess Bitch Shahade addresses the eternal question why so few women play chess (well).

Further, Shahade endeavours to promote chess through her organisation 9 Queens. 9 Queens is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to extending the benefits of chess to under-served and under-represented populations. It offers free chess education programs specifically designed to promote critical thinking skills, academic performance, and self-confidence. Through chess, it motivates, empowers and engages women and at-risk youth to realize their potential and achieve academic and personal success.

On Wednesday afternoon, 16 November Jennifer Shahade will take part in the youth chess event.
On Friday evening, 18 November Jennifer Shahade has a book presentation in the English bookshop.
