Grandmaster Hans Ree (1944) is a writer and columnist. Ree won the Dutch championship four times: in 1967, 1969, 1971 and 1982. Only Max Euwe, Jan Timman and Loek van Wely have won more national titles. Major tournament achievements include shared third place in the IBM tournament in 1968 and shared first prize with Boris Spasski in an open tournament in Vancouver in 1971. Later that year he beat Donner in a match 4.5-3.5. From 1966 to 1984 he played for the Dutch Olympic team.
Ree has a chess column in the Dutch national paper NRC Handelsblad. A selection of Ree’s chess columns have been translated into English and published as The Human Comedy of Chess (1999, Milford USA).
In recognition of his merit in the Dutch chess world Ree received the Euwe ring in 2001 from Hans Böhm. In 2007 he passed the ring on to Genna Sosonko.
On 15 November Hans Ree will deliver a lecture on Max Euwe.
