Grandmaster Friðrik Ólafsson (Iceland, b. 1935 ) succeeded Max Euwe as president of the world chess federation FIDE in 1978. In 1952 he became national champion of Iceland and in 1953 of Scandinavia. At Hastings 1955/56 Olafsson shared first prize with Viktor Korchnoi, and in 1959 he won the tournament in Wijk aan Zee.
Ólafsson’s best result in the cycle for the world championship was a shared joint fifth/sixth place at the interzonal tournament in Portoroz 1958. It earned him the grandmaster title and a place in the candidates’ tournament, in which he finished seventh. He also played in the next cycle (Interzonal Stockholm 1962) but didn’t qualify for the candidates’ matches.
His best tournament results are joint third place for the Piatigorsky Cup, Los Angeles 1963 and a joint first place with Ljubomir Ljubojevic at Wijk aan Zee in 1976, ahead of Michael Tal. His last performance on Dutch soil was in 2007, when he participated in the Euwe Stimulans event.
